David and Darcy
Married 8 Years
David and I met while working at a call center. I had been working at this company for a few months when he started working there. We instantly disliked each other. We didn’t talk for the first several weeks, and when we finally did, it was business only. Slowly, that turned into a bit of a friendship and after knowing each other for a few months, he mentioned that he wanted to meet people, specifically girls, in the area (he had recently moved from out of state) and I agreed to set him up with my younger sister. He was a little intimidated to go out with her alone so I agreed to find a date and we would double.
Just a few hours before we were all supposed to go out together, my date called and cancelled. So I told David and my sister that they would have to go alone. But, again, they insisted it would be too awkward so I reluctantly agreed to go without a date. I was not excited about it but didn’t really have much of a choice. So the three of us went and had an okay time.
The next morning, David called me to “see how the date went”. I told him over and over that I really didn’t know. My sister hadn’t said much about it either way. But he just kept asking. He really seemed to want to know. It took about a half an hour of this and his vague questions for me to realize that he didn’t really care what my sister thought but, rather, had called to talk to me! I was excited but it seemed a little bit strange. Just a few weeks before, I could hardly stand the guy and now I find out he likes me!
Nothing much happened between us, except a little conversation at work, until I asked him to come help me move. He was more than willing to drive the 1 ½ hrs each way and that was the first time I realized just how much he liked me. Needless to say, that moving trip ended with a kiss and six weeks later we were engaged. We have now been married for eight years!
How We Strengthen Our Marriage
David often works long hours and spends a lot of time traveling. We also have two little girls and lots of extended family around so we don’t always get as much time alone together as we would like so we have learned to take advantage of the little moments. We send text messages back and forth and call each other several times a day. We also make sure that we put the kids in bed early enough that we have a few minutes to catch up with each other at the end of a long day. We try to have date nights on a regular basis and enjoying taking little mini vacations as a couple from time to time.
